According to statistics, between 1900 and 1950 human knowledge doubled; from 1950 to 1975 it doubled again; and now they are saying it is doubling every 900 days. By 2020, global knowledge is predicted to double every 72 days!

Think of how much information a leader or an executive has to deal with in their job. The bigger the organization is, the more information leaders need to filter and process. And more factors come into play such what to retain, what to delegate, and what can be dismissed. So of course all these factors will lead to potential stresses and challenges.

Some of the leaders are target oriented and may not worry about the "how" part of "what" gets done. They find it easy to delegate, in fact they may end up being surprised when the output is not to their liking or when it is not even near what they would want. This will end up creating a crisis situation where the leader himself will have to take control, making the subordinate redundant and overloading the leader significantly.

Some of the others are so concerned about the quality of the deliverable and would like to monitor each step of the task. They know the best way of doing things and are quick to point out the misgivings and mistakes of others. They may be too hung up about a specific way of working that they are not open to others ideas and thoughts and find it difficult to delegate. Being able to delegate effectively means that the needs a leader must at times to “let go”.

Some others just expect their teams to take full ownership without themselves being accountable for the deliveries, think that delegating is a means of absolving themselves of all responsibility as well, they expect the teams to deliver and when it does not happen, are quick to lay the complete blame on the team, even sometimes ignoring the fact that the failure of the team is also their own failure.

Delegation is a fine balance and is also related to “emotional expression” context of communication. When we are not able to communicate effectively, there are chances we do not develop enough confidence on others and may not delegating effectively. And chances are we don’t have the process to differentiate between what is right and wrong.

Delegating is like "Trust", while too much trust or blind faith will definitely lead to failure , too less of trust will lead to overwhelming you with you too much requirements of supervision making you too busy to deal with strategic issues leading to another sort of failure.
